After transplanting my cabbage, broccoli, etc., something began eating them. Quite a few are nothing but stems now. I applied some pepper spray between the rains to try and deter the critter. It did help a little. Then the eating seemed to stop, and I couldn't figure out why. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the critters leaving, but I found a Killdeer nest between the cabbages. Killdeer are ground nesting birds who feed on all kinds of insects. They'll eat seeds too if you give them a chance. This little bird has laid 3 eggs smack dab in the middle of the garden and will do whatever is necessary to protect them. When they feel threatened, they commence to screaming and trying to draw any predator away from their eggs. Maybe she is responsible for the decrease in damage to my plants. I don't know for sure, but I certainly think it's worth a try letting her go on about her business.
