a landscape of ever amusing contradictions on unstretched canvas: – of predictable rhythms (day and night, high tide and low tide, routine and intuition, rent and bureaucracy) and unpredictable rhythms (good fortune, bad poetry, chance, mistakes and chaos).
Berlin-based Syrian musician Khaled Kurbeh makes his Research Records debut with Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh, a tapestry of soundscapes written, performed and recorded across four years as part of his practice muhawalāt [attempts, variations] and hawāmesh [margins]: an outlet of gestures, sonic footnotes and observations from the everyday.
Kurbeh’s first release in seven years departs from his largely acoustic debut, Aphorisms, a collaboration with oud player Raman Khalaf and ensemble with elements of maqām and jazz.
Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh offers a collection of 10 electroacoustic compositions – they’re brooding and experimental with hints of musique concrète. The tracklist implies a mapping or an itinerary. Field recordings of swallows and the snapping and un-shelling of sunflower seeds on interlude Nuzha I [Excursion I] are countered by sparse composition of low-end synth, harmonium, upright piano and prepared fender rhodes played with mallets on Darb I–II [Path I–II]. Patterns of cymbals and agitated bells appear on Jauqét Ajrās [Choir of Bells], while currents of bowed strings shiver and stutter on al-Ajrāf [The Cliffs]. The release captures four years of overlapping sonic wanders, finely balancing tensions of harmony and dissonance, stillness and resonance, texture and rhythm – recorded inside and outside.
The gatefold vinyl features artworks by Ida Lawrence and includes a booklet of 10 painted variations of the one scene. On the outer cover, paths stretch under a dramatically accented and vivid sky; while inside, the same landscape appears over and over in another light.

Solo excursions from Tim Karmouche (The Murlocs/Crepes/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild) provide a joyous confluence of melody and rhythm, an instrumental ride through imaginary soundtracks and drifting liminal atmospheres.
Live From The Bubble strikes as a pure and earnest pursuit of experimentation in a fashion that seeks to evoke lifes simple pleasures. Crafted over many an hour spent in the mysterious studio space he nicknames the bubble, the various multi-tracks are looped and layered in a way that pays homage to old library funk and conjures up images of tight, seasoned session musicians in a pre-internet era. Like an old friend youve known for years, Mouches chords and harmonies communicate sentiments in a silent, knowing fashion.
A deliberate and necessary eschewing of words. The array of styles heard across the album hint to a fondness for exotica and surf rock, basking in a sepia-toned woozy nostalgia as opposed to wallowing in melancholy. Elements of Steve Hiett or G.S. Schray flicker in and out across the stereo field, particularly on the closing piece Thinking Straight, which despite its minor keys captures a mood of warmth and content, an end of summer lullaby to close proceedings. Karmouches own admission that the process of LFTB was centred around enjoyment comes as no surprise.")

Packed full of DIY dub mixing, cosmic orchestration and raw, percussion driven polyrhythms, the recordings have been remastered and put to vinyl for the first time with sections from Casual Rhythms Vol. 1 being re-shaped into previously unavailable single tracks. Recording plays a big role in the Elite Beat creative process. The studio as an instrument. Much of the Elite Beat music is mixed in an all-hands-on-deck dub style approach - live with an analog mixer and loads of FX being thrown and dubbed in real time. The sound is genre-less rhythm music with an emphasis on live playing, free form expression and technique that borrows from soundsystem culture. Inspiration can be heard from all parts of time and place. Some Ethio Jazz, Black Ark psychedelia, Exotica, Malian blues, even Haight-Ashbury in the summer of love. Each member an accomplished musician in their own right, Elite Beat thrive on collaboration. 2018 saw the release of their astral-Saharan jams with celebrated Taureg guitarist Mdou Moctar. The players get together every Wednesday evening, sometimes to chat, sometimes to play. The ‘record’ button gets pressed when they find what they are searching for. For this crew it’s all about ‘Casual Rhythms / Harmonious Lifestyles’ - if things don’t fall under that mantra, then it’s got to go. ‘Less is more’ for Elite Beat and their cosmic sounds.")

The inner-western suburb of Melbourne features not only in the album title (its postcode is 3011) but goes deeper to form a central part of the records narrative and reflection. For all six members - Chris Jennings (Swazi Gold, Sagamore, Sledgehammer), Sam Cooper (Crepes, Swazi Gold, Sagamore, Sledgehammer), Tim Karmouche (Crepes, Swazi Gold, The Murlocs), Sarah Quirk, Monty Hartnett (Sleep Decade, Miris, Sagamore) and James Guida (Laguna, Environments) - Footscray buoyed periods of music exploration and discovery. After more than six year of writing, rehearsing and recording in the suburb, theres no doubt that Footscray is home for the band. Jennings adds that the album is, a bit of a recap of the last three years for Dreamin Wild, drawing attention to the change and growth many of the eight songs have undergone since creation. I Dont Disagree is an album highlight; an almost seven-minute track that struts along calmly, taking life as it is. Quirks soulful refrain soars atop Jennings laconic vocals, carrying the song to its end. Dynon Life is another album gem, reminiscent of summer in the city, and happy seeking excess. Heaven in Thirty Eleven is an ode to a Melbourne suburb brimming with culture and stories, made by artists who are proud to call it home.")

Research Records presents Melbourne electronic quartet Big Yawns second contribution to the label, South Preston Garage. A title to honour the bands beloved bandroom, S.P.G compiles demos extracted from the studio for a digital release with a limited run of cassettes. Big Yawn reflects that completing the EP presented the challenge of creatively engineering the lo-fi recordings in a way that offered thrilling and creative insight for us and perhaps some replay value for the listener.
S.P.G embodies Big Yawns trademark pastiche, fusing together rich percussion and sweeping synthesizers that are recontextualised through an extensive shed jam. The band characterises the first two tracks British Teeth and Burno as Big Yawn flavoured DnB, with refracted drum phrasing and unrelenting delays. Cascading acid-tinged bass rules in the quivering 4 Dads; a venture into the bands stockier temperament. The panoramic Burton Bell delivers raw and biting percussion, while remaining faithful to electronics with its layered sampling. The release then disperses into seaside rapture with its farewell Bad Boy. On Bad Boy, the band comment that the track is perhaps our most melodic number to date, with heavily looping synths evoking a Hiroshi Sato/city-pop feel.
What is perhaps most unique about Big Yawn is that they present familiar electronic sounds amplified as a live band. A timely release; S.P.G translates the satisfaction of hearing a live band in a period when all we really want is to go to a gig.")

Ithā Sajā is an ode to dusk, dawn and what’s in between.
Or, Ithā Sajā is a collection of piano recordings I made in my Berlin studio between:
– dusk and dawn
– Hinterhof sununu chatter
– construction site clamour
– upstairs scuffles
– U-Bahn rumbles
– Kreuzberg and Tempelhof
– 2021 and 2022.
wal-Leil [by the night] is inspired by conversations with my friends Hend Alkahwaji and Wejdan Nassif during theatre rehearsals.
wal-Leili [by the night II] is an imagined conversation with my friend Raman Khalaf. An homage to the jurjina rhythm found in folk music of northern Iraq and Mesopotamia.
In wan-Najmi [by the star], one phrase repeats over and over with subtle changes – inspired by a procrastinating artist (quietly) dancing before a (nearly) stretched, (almost) blank canvas, dreaming up a (new but familiar) pattern.
In Ithā Hawā [to fall / to fall in love], a flâneur takes an early evening stroll along the Landwehr canal in Kreuzberg.
Tadāris [terrains] is an ongoing series of acoustic études – played with mallets, objects and fingers inside and outside the piano.
In Ithā Sajā [if it settles / when it darkens], my left hand keeps a steady rhythm while the right one wanders in search of a nocturnal motif. My eyes peek out the window. It’s the first attempts of dawn.
Marking Khaled Kurbeh’s second release with Research Records, Ithā Sajā is a collection of nine piano pieces. The gatefold vinyl features cover art and a booklet of drawings by Ida Lawrence – nine repetitions of Khaled’s upright piano, taking shape or disintegrating as one turns the page. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long were introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouches talent for harmony shines through on its own level.
Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in Juice or Crystal Water. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it.")

Research Records teams up with organist and synthesist E. Bobby G. to release his sophomore album, Bobby Business. Once again, the album is primarily centered around the 1982 Kawai DX900, but it masterfully explores more genres than his debut, Giving You M.O.R.E.
Bobby Business was recorded in 2022 after E. Bobby G. received an eviction notice from his beloved sharehouse of 12 years. After moving out, he stored the organ at his workplace, Bakehouse Studios, where his boss let him use the space overnight to record until the early hours. The remainder of the album was recorded in his old studio space, NGBE.
The first track, Ha-Ha, is as meditative as it is glittery, with floating sustained chords. Big Boy and Disco Shift bring back a slightly more polished E. Bobby G. sound—lo-fi library music with bright tones that will appeal to fans of proto-electronic icons like Brian Bennett. Tracks like Lucky Strike and Tropical Dino Ride are video game music dreams, featuring West Coast lead lines and strutting percussion. The second half of the album explores spaced-out 90s downtempo and dub elements, with a distinctive refinement that hides the fact it was created primarily using the Kawai DX900.
Bobby Business closes with Lillian, a sonic dedication to the artists Grandmother, with a more traditional song structure that hints at what Bobby has planned next.")
