The inner-western suburb of Melbourne features not only in the album title (its postcode is 3011) but goes deeper to form a central part of the record's narrative and reflection. For all six members - Chris Jennings (Swazi Gold, Sagamore, Sledgehammer), Sam Cooper (Crepes, Swazi Gold, Sagamore, Sledgehammer), Tim Karmouche (Crepes, Swazi Gold, The Murlocs), Sarah Quirk, Monty Hartnett (Sleep Decade, Miris, Sagamore) and James Guida (Laguna, Environments) - Footscray buoyed periods of music exploration and discovery. After more than six year of writing, rehearsing and recording in the suburb, there's no doubt that Footscray is home for the band. Jennings adds that the album is, "a bit of a recap of the last three years for Dreamin' Wild," drawing attention to the change and growth many of the eight songs have undergone since creation. "I Don't Disagree" is an album highlight; an almost seven-minute track that struts along calmly, taking life as it is. Quirk's soulful refrain soars atop Jennings' laconic vocals, carrying the song to its end. "Dynon Life" is another album gem, reminiscent of summer in the city, and happy seeking excess. Heaven in Thirty Eleven is an ode to a Melbourne suburb brimming with culture and stories, made by artists who are proud to call it home.

Album: South Preston Garage [EP]
Track: 3 of 6
Title: 4 Dads
Artist: Big Yawn
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RRC02
Formats: Cassette/Digital
Digital Release: 4th September 2020
Physical Release: 4th September 2020
About This Release:
Research Records presents Melbourne electronic quartet Big Yawns second contribution to the label, South Preston Garage. A title to honour the bands beloved bandroom, S.P.G compiles demos extracted from the studio for a digital release with a limited run of cassettes. Big Yawn reflects that completing the EP presented the challenge of creatively engineering the lo-fi recordings in a way that offered thrilling and creative insight for us and perhaps some replay value for the listener.
S.P.G embodies Big Yawns trademark pastiche, fusing together rich percussion and sweeping synthesizers that are recontextualised through an extensive shed jam. The band characterises the first two tracks British Teeth and Burno as Big Yawn flavoured DnB, with refracted drum phrasing and unrelenting delays. Cascading acid-tinged bass rules in the quivering 4 Dads; a venture into the bands stockier temperament. The panoramic Burton Bell delivers raw and biting percussion, while remaining faithful to electronics with its layered sampling. The release then disperses into seaside rapture with its farewell Bad Boy. On Bad Boy, the band comment that the track is perhaps our most melodic number to date, with heavily looping synths evoking a Hiroshi Sato/city-pop feel.
What is perhaps most unique about Big Yawn is that they present familiar electronic sounds amplified as a live band. A timely release; S.P.G translates the satisfaction of hearing a live band in a period when all we really want is to go to a gig. Album: Ithā Sajā [ALBUM]
Track: 7 of 9
Title: Tadārīs III
Artist: Khaled Kurbeh
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RESEARCH015
Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 4th September 2026
Physical Release: 4th September 2026
About This Release:
Ithā Sajā is an ode to dusk, dawn and what’s in between.
Or, Ithā Sajā is a collection of piano recordings I made in my Berlin studio between:
– dusk and dawn
– Hinterhof sununu chatter
– construction site clamour
– upstairs scuffles
– U-Bahn rumbles
– Kreuzberg and Tempelhof
– 2021 and 2022.
wal-Leil [by the night] is inspired by conversations with my friends Hend Alkahwaji and Wejdan Nassif during theatre rehearsals.
wal-Leili [by the night II] is an imagined conversation with my friend Raman Khalaf. An homage to the jurjina rhythm found in folk music of northern Iraq and Mesopotamia.
In wan-Najmi [by the star], one phrase repeats over and over with subtle changes – inspired by a procrastinating artist (quietly) dancing before a (nearly) stretched, (almost) blank canvas, dreaming up a (new but familiar) pattern.
In Ithā Hawā [to fall / to fall in love], a flâneur takes an early evening stroll along the Landwehr canal in Kreuzberg.
Tadāris [terrains] is an ongoing series of acoustic études – played with mallets, objects and fingers inside and outside the piano.
In Ithā Sajā [if it settles / when it darkens], my left hand keeps a steady rhythm while the right one wanders in search of a nocturnal motif. My eyes peek out the window. It’s the first attempts of dawn.
Marking Khaled Kurbeh’s second release with Research Records, Ithā Sajā is a collection of nine piano pieces. The gatefold vinyl features cover art and a booklet of drawings by Ida Lawrence – nine repetitions of Khaled’s upright piano, taking shape or disintegrating as one turns the page. Thank you to Alessandra Peach and Maryos Syawish from Research Records, and to everyone listening. Khaled Kurbeh - Tadārīs III [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/mHt7QGRsOpo/mqdefault.jpg)

Title: Swans In The Night
Artist: Mouche
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RESEARCH011
Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 26th May 2023
Physical Release: 26th May 2023
About This Release:
Mouche (real name Tim Karmouche) returns to Australian label Research Records with another full-length of imaginary soundtracks, instrumentals and sun-kissed digital jazz. Active on the Melbourne scene in projects such as Crepes/The Murlocs/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild, Tims first album Live From The Bubble arrived back in 2020 as an ode to his aptly named studio space - The Bubble.
Lake Songs builds on those same atmospheres, showcasing the inward-looking craft of his one-man band. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long were introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouches talent for harmony shines through on its own level.
Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in Juice or Crystal Water. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it. Album: Live From The Bubble [ALBUM]
Track: 7 of 10
Title: The Bubble
Artist: Mouche
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RRC01
Formats: Digital
Digital Release: 10th July 2020
About This Release:
Solo excursions from Tim Karmouche (The Murlocs/Crepes/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild) provide a joyous confluence of melody and rhythm, an instrumental ride through imaginary soundtracks and drifting liminal atmospheres.
Live From The Bubble strikes as a pure and earnest pursuit of experimentation in a fashion that seeks to evoke lifes simple pleasures. Crafted over many an hour spent in the mysterious studio space he nicknames the bubble, the various multi-tracks are looped and layered in a way that pays homage to old library funk and conjures up images of tight, seasoned session musicians in a pre-internet era. Like an old friend youve known for years, Mouches chords and harmonies communicate sentiments in a silent, knowing fashion.
A deliberate and necessary eschewing of words. The array of styles heard across the album hint to a fondness for exotica and surf rock, basking in a sepia-toned woozy nostalgia as opposed to wallowing in melancholy. Elements of Steve Hiett or G.S. Schray flicker in and out across the stereo field, particularly on the closing piece Thinking Straight, which despite its minor keys captures a mood of warmth and content, an end of summer lullaby to close proceedings. Karmouches own admission that the process of LFTB was centred around enjoyment comes as no surprise. Mouche - The Bubble [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ne8Ak6uFrMg/mqdefault.jpg)

About This Release:
Big Yawn - NGB
Research Records welcomes back Melbourne quartet Big Yawn for their fourth full-length offering, NGBE.
Big Yawns ability to blend complex rhythm sections with infectious basslines, deep synth work, and tongue-in-cheek sampling remains ever-present, and perhaps is the most advanced weve heard yet.
Sitting in a world of its own, the album—named after the groups beloved and lost warehouse space, National Gallery of Brunswick East (where most of the material was recorded)—features a wide array of soundscapes spanning mutated drum n bass, low-key grime, rap, and dub-wise antics, all laced with a heavy dose of FX.
Equal parts deep and menacing, the nine tracks encapsulate Big Yawns evolution in the studio and on stage, most notably through their collaboration 2Stroke with Melbourne-based future rap prodigy Teether and brought to life visually with album artwork by Julian Hocking. Album: Bobby Business [ALBUM]

Title: Big Boy
Artist: E. Bobby G.
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RESEARCH16
Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 29th November 2024
Physical Release: 29th November 2024
About This Release:
Research Records teams up with organist and synthesist E. Bobby G. to release his sophomore album, Bobby Business. Once again, the album is primarily centered around the 1982 Kawai DX900, but it masterfully explores more genres than his debut, Giving You M.O.R.E.
Bobby Business was recorded in 2022 after E. Bobby G. received an eviction notice from his beloved sharehouse of 12 years. After moving out, he stored the organ at his workplace, Bakehouse Studios, where his boss let him use the space overnight to record until the early hours. The remainder of the album was recorded in his old studio space, NGBE.
The first track, Ha-Ha, is as meditative as it is glittery, with floating sustained chords. Big Boy and Disco Shift bring back a slightly more polished E. Bobby G. sound—lo-fi library music with bright tones that will appeal to fans of proto-electronic icons like Brian Bennett. Tracks like Lucky Strike and Tropical Dino Ride are video game music dreams, featuring West Coast lead lines and strutting percussion. The second half of the album explores spaced-out 90s downtempo and dub elements, with a distinctive refinement that hides the fact it was created primarily using the Kawai DX900.
Bobby Business closes with Lillian, a sonic dedication to the artists Grandmother, with a more traditional song structure that hints at what Bobby has planned next. E. Bobby G. - Big Boy [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/pgZswBX1cm4/mqdefault.jpg)

About This Release:
Research Records continue their voyage into Elite Beats extraordinary back catalogue with their second compilation Selected Rhythms Vol. 2. The chosen tracks are lifted from the Portland collectives three-part cassette series Casual Rhythms; a treasure chest of meditative and genre-defying instrumentals where percussion and dub accents prevail.
Elite Beats approach to producing music is their routine for respite. The band reflects when they come together weekly, its an opportunity to put down their other projects, ambitions, work and life stresses for a few hours and just be. This spirit flows into their free-form expression, absorbing both the band and the listener. Additionally,Elite Beatreveals the foundation of their output lies in the discipline of being able to sustain vibration through repetition. Theres a constant coiling mantra throughout each track, the band commenting while many musicians can get totally bored playing the same thing over and over, we love it!
The mixing process swings between embracing the warmth of live recordings and generating noise with analog manipulation. The band experiments with their recorded sound expressing we are less concerned with sounding like 90% of recorded music out there and more concerned with trying shit out.Elite Beatalso cite dub music and its process of recording as an inspiration and how this approach lends itself to a deep listening experience, a notion the band channels artfully.
Remastered for the first time on vinyl, Selected Rhythms Vol. 2 adds to the immersive and interstellar tapestry of Elite Beat. The compilation delves deep into the healing and hypnosis that characterises the collective. For those who were inevitably left looking for more with Selected Rhythms Vol. 1, heres a no-brainer. About This Release:
Big Yawn make experimental electronic music by fusing a wash of sweeping synthesizers, heavily refracted vocal sampling, motorik style percussion and disorientating dub FX.
Their latest studio release Pressure Acts creates a space where breaks compete with live drums compete with drones. Relentless pummelling bass lines and kinetic dub FX come standard.
Big Yawns energetic and unrelenting live performances create a definitive impression on this release. The sonic textures in the record are lush, stoned, frenetic and fun. The music is sinister yet also tongue-in-cheek — Phil Collins and Slipknot may have even been sampled.
The first single Ragazzo is ideal for joy rides in HSVs and/or flaunting at the local disco parlor - a dank blend of YMO style pop hooks, driving bass, delicate synths, and a robotic pulse. Big Yawn - Precise Packets [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/pxbc3p9hoYk/mqdefault.jpg)
