For years, we’ve been told a simple story: Carbs raise insulin. Insulin makes you store fat. So if you want to lose weight, just cut carbs.
But what if that story is incomplete… or even completely misleading?
Today, I’m joined by Dr. Alan Christianson, a clinician who has spent decades studying metabolism, thyroid function, and insulin resistance. According to Dr. Christianson, much of what we think we know about carbs, fat, and weight gain is overly simplistic.
Because when you look at the full picture, a surprising curiosity gap emerges.
None of the healthiest, longest-lived populations eat low-carb diets. Yet they remain lean, metabolically healthy, and largely free from chronic disease. That alone should make you question whether carbs are really the problem.
In reality, insulin resistance isn’t just driven by carbohydrate intake. It often reflects energy overload, inactivity, and deeper metabolic dysfunction. Once you see that, the focus shifts. It’s not just about carbs versus fat.
In this episode of The Energy Blueprint, Dr. Christianson and I break down the real drivers of fat gain, insulin resistance, and metabolic health, and why the mainstream conversation has missed the mark.
What We Discuss In This Episode:
The Carb Myth: Why carbs are not inherently fattening and why many high-carb diets are associated with excellent metabolic health.
The Big Picture: The real drivers of fat gain, and why focusing only on insulin or carbs misses the mark.
Insulin Resistance Explained: Why insulin resistance is often a response to lifestyle factors and energy overload, not just carbohydrate intake.
The Danger of Sitting: How inactivity alone can rapidly impair insulin sensitivity, even in otherwise healthy people.
Fat Burning vs. Fat Loss: Why eating more fat doesn’t necessarily mean you’re burning your own body fat.
The Real Focus: Why the carbs versus fat debate is largely a distraction from what actually matters.
Nutritional Foundations: The key role of whole, minimally processed foods in supporting a healthy metabolism.
