Long before modern insulated jackets, synthetic layers, or waterproof boots, legendary outdoorsman Horace Kephart was winter camping and traveling through the Appalachian Mountains using simple, rugged clothing that actually worked.

In this video, I break down Kephart’s forgotten winter clothing and footwear — the exact garments, layers, and boots he actually wore in cold weather, based on his writings, photographs, and early-1900s field experience.

From heavy wool coats and layered garments to leather footwear, socks, mittens, and traditional waterproofing methods like grease treatments, this is a historically accurate look at how Kephart stayed warm and functional in winter — without modern materials or technology.

These systems weren’t about comfort or convenience. They were about reliability, movement, and surviving long days outdoors in cold, wet conditions. Many of the principles Kephart relied on still apply today for winter camping, bushcraft, and traditional outdoor travel.
