Steeped in equal parts golden age hip-hop sensibilities and lost 60s and 70s film scores, the debut LP from Leroi Conroy weighs in heavy and has been years in the making. The first two tracks from the album were released in 2017 as a 45, which were sampled in the years that followed by DJ Premier, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Macklemore, Phantogram, and more. But after its release, Terry Cole aka Leroi Conroy spent much of his time growing his indie soul label Colemine Records and producing records for others (Okonski, Parlor Greens, Wesley Bright, Black Market Brass, Kendra Morris, Rudy De Anda, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Andrew Gabbard) as opposed to his own.
Now, eight years after many of the rhythm tracks were put to tape on the trusted Tascam 388, Leroi Conroy’s debut LP, A Tiger’s Tale, will be released. The album is conceptualized as a hypothetical soundtrack to an alternate telling of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The narrative here being man’s quest to tame and bend nature to his will...and nature’s response. The album is a mix of triumphant instrumental scores alongside absolutely grim, dark, and at times dissonant moody tracks. The underlying element of hip-hop’s sample culture is obvious throughout and there’s no doubt many of these tracks will be flipped in the years to come.
Sonically, the record fits right in the cut alongside many other Colemine instrumental artists: dirty lo-fi drums, blaring horns, wah guitar, Hammond organ, and plenty of cinematic sprinklings like flute, nylon guitar, and vibraphone. Drums are courtesy of Cole’s longtime collaborator Rob Houk and are truly the backbone of the record. And with a couple of features from Colemine artists Kelly Finnigan and Jimmy James, the record is truly a family affair. File under: To Be Sampled

The idea for Contact High came when my stoner elderly neighbor Phil suggested I write a song called contact high, but about good vibes instead of about weed. We laughed at this concept together but it stuck in my mind, and when one of my best friends was going through a tough time I used the idea to write her a song that might help her see what it feels like to be around her radiant energy. With her in mind, the song came easily. We referenced old 60’s and 70’s recordings for this one, specifically channeling the sonic vibes of Chris Montez’s album “Watch What Happens.” We listened to songs from it between takes to really try to capture the energy. What ensues is the most upbeat song on the album, with the craziest drums ever by Sam Jones (we really told him to just go wild and he understood the assignment), Garrett Barley on a 12 string electric guitar and ace tone organ, David Parry on the piano, Mayya Feygina on bass, and yours truly on vocals and acoustic guitar. This song was probably the most fun to make and we were all dancing around the studio the whole day. - Mae Powell

Mae Powell, a Bay Area based songstress and rainbow entity, presents her debut Karma Chief single Rope You In, off her forthcoming Sophomore album. The dreamy soundscape, intertwined with Maes stunning vocals, creates a refreshing yet comforting sound in the indie singer-songwriter space. The electric 12 string solo, played by Garrett Barley, runs through a Leslie speaker, adding an ever enchanting and mysterious sonic element.
Writing this track was the beginning of a long emotional journey that inevitably resulted in an entire LP. I feel grateful for the way writing songs helps me make sense of and process emotions while Im in the thick of them, Mae says. The tune was recorded and produced by David Parry (Alice Phoebe Lou) on Vancouver Island.
Maes debut album, Both Ways Brighter was released in 2021 and is an homage to love and friendship. You can find her singing jazz, spinning vinyl, or playing her original music with her 5 piece band made up of her very best friends.

Like a burst of sunshine breaking through, the opening notes arrive on a soft snare beat, a twinkle of keys, and the light, airy flutter of a muted horn completing the picture. The sound sits somewhere between Brenton Wood’s breezy West Coast soul and Alton Ellis’s honeyed reggae sweetness — Quiñones toggling effortlessly between the two worlds in a single song. The lyrics follow a protagonist worn down by a woman who can’t make up her mind, the two forever out of sync, never quite landing on the same page at the same moment. By the second verse, Quiñones lets loose in one of his signature emotional howls — raw and searching, the sound of someone who has hit the bottom and is pleading not to be left there.
