Fashion at the LBI: Kaufhaus N. Israel
In the early twentieth century, Kaufhaus N. Israel was more than a Berlin department store. A flourishing fashion retailer and self-described “women’s paradise,” it helped shape the tastes of German consumers for decades.
Between 1899 and 1914, N. Israel distributed a remarkable series of illustrated annual publications to its customers—free of charge. Produced with cutting-edge printing techniques, these lavish albums explored current issues through text and extravagant photographic imagery, with surprisingly little direct advertising.
From 1909 onward, several volumes took up explicitly feminist themes. They celebrated women’s rights activists and highlighted women’s contributions to modern life: in sports, politics, the arts, entertainment, and professional work. Their subjects included figures as unexpected as a female tattoo artist and a snake-farm owner—appearing almost a decade before women gained the right to vote in Germany and the United States.
Owned by an acculturated Jewish family, N. Israel occupied a distinctive place at the intersection of ready-made fashion, consumer culture, and changing ideas about womanhood. Its publications did not simply sell clothing; they helped imagine a “New Woman” for modern Berlin.
The Leo Baeck Institute’s Israel Family Collection preserves materials relating to this influential Berlin business and the family behind it.
