Katalin Karikó is a biochemist and professor at the University of Szeged, Hungary, and former vice president at BioNTech. For decades, her research has focused on RNA-mediated mechanisms to develop in vitro-transcribed mRNA for protein therapy. She co-discovered that nucleoside modifications suppress the inflammatory nature of RNA, expanding the therapeutic potential of mRNA. Her groundbreaking work enabled the rapid development of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines by BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna and has opened new avenues in personalized medicine. For her achievements, she shared the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
