The Chancel Choir at First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City presented the Requiem composed by Karl Jenkins (Welsh, b. 1944) on April 26, 2026.
In Karl Jenkins' Requiem, portions of the Latin liturgy are interwoven with Japanese haiku written as death poems and sung in Japanese. This composition contrasts traditional Western perspectives on death and the afterlife with a more ethereal, reflective acceptance of death expressed through nature-centered haiku. The result is a deeply moving musical expression of profound spiritual meaning and inspiration.
Karl Jenkins is a contemporary composer, born on February 17, 1944, in South Wales to a schoolteacher who was also a chapel organist and choirmaster. He studied at Cardiff University and the Royal Academy of Music in London before embarking on a career as a jazz musician. His projects have enjoyed widespread international success, earning 15 gold and platinum awards. He has received commissions from the Royal Ballet, the BBC, Charles III (then HRH The Prince of Wales), and the London Symphony Orchestra.
