Alan Jackson returned to court for the latest Karen Read cell phone hearing—and things quickly became personal. The July 13 hearing centered on Karen Read’s seized iPhones and whether Special Prosecutor Robert Cosgrove should remain involved in matters concerning the phones and the continuing witness-intimidation investigation.
In this video, I break down Jackson’s argument that Cosgrove was supposed to operate independently from the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office. Jackson focused on Cosgrove’s previous statement that he intended to meet with the DA’s office and discuss “our various options” before deciding whether to return the phones, seek reconsideration, or pursue an appeal.
I also examine Cosgrove’s response, his challenge to Karen Read’s standing, and his decision to cite Judge Beverly Cannone’s previous criticism of Jackson’s defense team. Jackson fired back, calling the personal attack beneath the dignity of the attorneys and the court and arguing that when someone lacks the facts and the law, they attack opposing counsel.
Did Cosgrove’s own words undermine the appearance of independence required of a special prosecutor? Judge Michael Doolin took the matter under advisement, so no final ruling has been issued yet.
