How to perform engine wash on aircraft

The drain and vent system on CFM 56-5B is divided into two parts; one which retains drained fluids until expelled during flight (reservoir), and one which discharges fluid directly overboard through the drain mast located in the fan compartment. The reservoir module is mounted on the transfer gearbox. The manifold module is also attached to the transfer gearbox and supports the drain mast, which protrudes through the fan cowl doors into the airstream.

The EDP supplies fluid to the system at a nominal pressure of 206 bar (3000 psi) with zero flow, and a flow of 150 l/min (39.6 US gal/min) at a pressure of 196 bar (2854 psi). The pump supplies this amount of fluid at a speed of 3702 rpm (equivalent to 93.5% engine N2 speed).
If the supply of fluid to the EDP stops (the fire valve is closed) the EDP can operate for a maximum of 15 mins. before it is damaged.

IFPC – Integrated Fuel Pump and Control (Baseline GTF)
1. Composition & Fuel Flow Path
Components: Fuel pump and fuel control.
Fuel Flow:
Boost stage (centrifugal pump) supplies low-pressure fuel to:
Fuel/Oil Heat Exchanger (FOHE)
Fuel filter
Gear stage inlet
Main stage (gear-type positive displacement pump) increases fuel pressure.
High-pressure fuel is routed to a metering valve inside the IFPC.
2. Mounting Location
Fuel pump is bolted to the fuel manifold on the top right of the main gearbox (MGB).
3. Functionality
IFPC provides measured fuel flow to the engine as scheduled by the EEC (Electronic Engine Controller).
4. Control Mechanism
The unit is electronically controlled, combining electrical and hydromechanical components.
(a) Metering Valve Control
Controlled by a dual coil torque motor (commanded by EEC).
Valve position feedback is given to EEC via dual coil LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer).
(b) Solenoids
Overspeed/Shutdown Solenoid:
Commands the Minimum Pressurizing and Shut Off Valve (MPSOV) to shut off fuel supply.
Pressure Equalization Solenoid:
Opens equalization bypass valve to balance pressure between primary and secondary fuel manifolds (after the flow divider).
Ensures uniform fuel-to-air ratio in the combustor.

The smaller flap opens during the flight:
- When the skin temperature is more than 34 deg.C (93.20 deg.F) (partially open circuit)
- If there is smoke in the avionics ventilation system
- If the Avionics Equipment Ventilation Computer (AEVC) 10HQ does not operate correctly
- If the skin temperature sensor is incorrectly calibrated or does not operate.
On the ground, if the valve does not close after the take-off sequence signal, the ground crew can manually close it. Before the manual closing of the valve, the crew must operare toggle switch of the valve to isolate it electrically.
The air conditioning system keeps the air in the pressurized fuselage compartments at the correct pressure, temperature and freshness.

The starting system of the engine utilizes pressurized air to drive a turbine at high speed. This turbine applies a torque to the engine high pressure rotor system through a reduction gear in the (starter) turbine and through the engine accessory drive system.
The air which is necessary to drive the starter comes from :
- the APU,
- or the second engine,
- or a ground power unit.
The starter air supply is controlled by a starter shutoff valve (SOV) pneumatically operated and electrically controlled. The SOV has a manual override capability which permits the valve to be opened or closed in case of failure of the electrical control.
The starter shutoff valve closes when the N2 speed reaches 50 percent.
The starter centrifugal clutch disengages when N2 speed is higher than 50 percent.
Engine starting is controlled from the ENG start panel 115VU located on center pedestal and ENG/MAN START switch on the overhead panel.
The starting sequence may be interrupted at any time by placing the MASTER control lever in OFF position which overrides the FADEC. When the MASTER control lever is in OFF position the HP fuel shutoff valve is closed and the engine is stopped.

Ever wondered how the engine tracks its fan speed? The N1 Speed Sensor on this turbofan engine is the answer. Installed at the 5:00 position on fan frame strut No.6, it reads the rotational speed of the LP rotor using magnetic induction.
It has 3 independent sensing elements inside, each with a magnet, coil, and pole piece. As the 30-tooth sensor ring spins, it generates signals—one tooth is slightly thicker to give a phase reference signal for trim balancing.
These signals go straight to the EVMU and ECU for real-time engine monitoring. Precision, reliability, and aerospace-grade engineering at work. 🔧✈️

The bleed systems of engines 1 and 2 are similar and operate independently of each other.

Air is tapped either from intermediate HP compressor stage through an IP bleed check valve or from high HP compressor stage through an HP bleed valve according to engine speed.

When engine speed is low, especially during aircraft descent with engine at iddle, IP port pressure is insufficient. The air is automatically bled from the HP port (high pressure, on the 9th stage) through the HP Bleed Valve and IP Bleed Check Valve is closed to prevent air recirculation.

When engine speed is high, the engine air bleed is in normal configuration. The air is bled from the IP port (intermediate pressure, on the 5th stage) through the IP Bleed Check Valve and HP Bleed Valve closes.

Description:
The proximity sensor is an electronic position indicator. The main components of the sensor are a sensor body, a sensor coil and an electrical connector. The sensor has a related target.
The sensor body contains the sensor coil. The coil is connected to the electrical connector.
Each proximity detection circuit contains:
- a proximity sensor
- a sensor target
- a channel of a proximity-sensor electronics card.
The proximity-sensor electronics-card has 14 channels and is located in the LGCIU.
Operation
The proximity sensor continuously transmits an electrical signal to the proximity-sensor electronics-card. As the target moves into or out of the proximity-sensor's actuation area it causes a change in the proximity sensor's electrical property. The electrical signal to the proximity sensor electronics card also changes. The proximity-sensor electronics-card converts these electrical signal changes into user status signals. The LGCIU control logic modules use these user status signals to control the extension and retraction of the L/G.

The engine LP fuel shut-off system controls the LP fuel-valves. Each LP fuel-valve isolates its engine from the fuel supply at the front spar.
ENG MASTER switch controls the operation of the LP fuel-valve. But if the related engine FIRE PUSH switch is operated the LP fuel-valve closes. valve is controled by two independent motors.

The bleed systems of engines 1 and 2 are similar and operate independently of each other.

Air is tapped either from intermediate HP compressor stage through an IP bleed check valve or from high HP compressor stage through an HP bleed valve according to engine speed.

When engine speed is low, especially during aircraft descent with engine at iddle, IP port pressure is insufficient. The air is automatically bled from the HP port (high pressure, on the 9th stage) through the HP Bleed Valve and IP Bleed Check Valve is closed to prevent air recirculation.

When engine speed is high, the engine air bleed is in normal configuration. The air is bled from the IP port (intermediate pressure, on the 5th stage) through the IP Bleed Check Valve and HP Bleed Valve closes.

The A318, A319, and A320 share a common fuel system design. The fuel tanks are integrated into the center fuselage area and the wings. The center tank is a part of the center wing box. The wing tanks are divided into inner cells and outer cells. To reduce the structural load on the wings, the fuel in the outer cells is not used until the fuel load in the inner cells decreases to a low level.
Two fuel pumps are installed in the center tank, and two other fuel pumps are installed in each wing tank inner cell. Fuel is supplied to the engines from the center tank first. Once the center tank is empty, fuel is supplied from the wing inner cells.
There is no direct feed from the outer cells to the engines. Two inter cell transfer valves allow fuel to transfer from the outer cells to the inner cells when the low level is reached.
