The arcade version of Altered Beast was released in 1988, but is more remembered for its SEGA Genesis port, which was the console's pack in game in America, Europe and Brazil.
I have never liked this game. The main issue is the poor hit detection with your attacks, sometimes you'll be standing right next to an enemy but your moves won't connect. The grave master enemies have really messed up hit boxes on their punches. Another problem I have with it is that there is no way to get any health back in this at all, and your health doesn't get replenished between levels either.
I would guess the developers decided to make Altered Beast as hard as possible, because the game is really short -which is the only reason I did it, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. You want to fully power up your character as quickly as you can, which means killing three of the white wolves as soon as they appear. Failing to kill all three in a row will result in the level continuing, meaning more enemies and more chances to die. If you do manage to consistently kill the wolves then the game can be beaten in around 10 minutes.
The first boss feels like it should be the final one -it can be surprisingly difficult because he throws out a lot of projectiles, and you haven't got that much room to move around. The second boss is easy, if you get to the lower right you can just spam the kick button move over and over for a quick kill. The third boss should be easy, unless you manage to mess up like I did twice. The fourth boss is easy, and the final boss is a joke. It feels like the final boss should have a second form or something, but he doesn't.
The Astro City Mini was released in Japan late on in 2020, and later got released elsewhere in 2021. I was initially really excited when it was announced, mainly because Virtua Fighter was going to be on it -I was hoping more Model 1 and maybe even some Model 2 games would be included. So it was pretty disappointing when Virtua Fighter ended up being the only Model system game on it at all.
It does include games that had never had console ports before, with Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder being the most notable. But some of these games are awful, such as Dark Edge and Arabian Fight. And did it really need to have three different Columns games, but not a single OutRun or Hang-On game?
The games also all lack option settings of any kind, which is a surprising omission. I want to say that all games are on their default settings, but I know Rad Mobile isn't -you start the race with only 45 seconds, when you're supposed to have 60.
