Jonathan Rauch of the Brookings Institution talks about the current challenges to freedom of expression on college campuses. He asks how the case can be made to today's younger generation that allowing freedom of expression is vitally important, both for education and for a free society. Jonathan Rauch draws from his long experience researching and discussing these questions, and from his book on free speech, Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought, which was first published more than 25 years ago and remains relevant today.
Jonathan Rauch is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, and is the author of seven books and many articles on public policy, culture, and government. He is a contributing editor of The Atlantic and recipient of the 2005 National Magazine Award.
This talk was delivered at the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University in July 2019.
