John Pidoux was born in Islington, London in 1875 but spent most of his life in Birmingham, West Midlands, where he played and taught banjo. His recorded for various companies from 1903 to 1915. He died in retirement in Sidmouth, Devon in 1953.
Joe Morley was a banjoist who recorded very little himself but was responsible for many English banjo compositions, including this delightful ragtime-influenced number. Morley has been described as the "doyen" of England's finger-style banjoists.
Cinch records were manufactured by The Gramophone Company, makers of HMV records. They were launched in 1913 to undercut cheap German imports, such as those made by Beka, but the First World War effectively ended all German imports and the last Cinch catalogue was published in early 1916.
