After backlash over the spring 2027 Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute exhibit and Met Gala theme honoring John Galliano, the controversial designer confirmed his exit from the event. In an Instagram post Aug. 31, Galliano acknowledged the backlash the museum faced in its decision to honor him and also reaffirmed his remorse over his past antisemitic and anti-Asian comments. "After much reflection and discussion with The Met and all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time," he wrote. "I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it.” Galliano's decision comes more than a decade after he was convicted of a hate crime—and fined 6,000 euros—by a French court for his public antisemitic and anti-Asian rants in a Paris bar. For her part, Met Gala organizer Anna Wintour described the designer—who would have been the third living designer to be honored with an exhibit after Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Comme des Garçons' Rei Kawakubo in 2017—stepping away as "very courageous and a measure of the man he is" in her own statement.
