Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira (1902-1976) was a brazilian politician who acted as President of Brazil from 1955 to 1960. Born during the belle epoque, Juscelino entered politics in 1934 being elected as a deputee for his home state, Minas Geraes, being favourable to Vargas during that period. In 1940 he was appointed Mayor of Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Geraes. Being a funding member of the right wing varguist PSD party, Juscelino would be elected a deputee again in 1945 and governor in 1950, being instrumental on the election of his menthor, Vargas, in 1950.
On the aftermath of the aborted coup of 1954, Juscelino arouse as the varguist candidate for the 1955 election, winning with a large margin as the population was bitter with the UDN party after the coup. On a last ditch attempt to prevent another varguist a coup was tried in november that year to prevent his takeover, but it was dismantled by Marshall Teixeira Lott. Kubitschek government is considered the hightest point of the brazilian golden age, being the most optimist government the country ever experienced with high growth, high investiment in healthcare, education and R&D, and a time where millions of brazilians left poverty, with the middle class being estabilished as a strong and powerfull class.
Having defeated three military coups on his government, Kubitschek candidate Lott lost to a third party candidate Jânio Quadros in 1960, but Quadros soon resigned allowing Vargas handpicked sucessor João Goulart (who had been elected vice president) to take power, already defeating a new coup with help of governor Brizola of RIo Grande do Sul with the legality campaign. When doom came in 1964, Juscelino hoped to win the 1965 election, but was excluded by the putschists and later the whole election got cancelled. Juscelino took part on the "Wide front" against the dictatorship in 1966, resulting on his arrest by the dictatorship. Nine years later he died on a car crash after his limousine crashed into a truck transporting plaster. His burial was attended by 300 000 people on the capital, being also a demonstration against the dictatorship that showed signals of imminent collapse by that time.
