The Portuguese village of São Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga was marked by the founding of the Colégio de São Paulo de Piratininga on 25 January 1554. Four centuries later the city had turned into a behemot and the largest industrial, urban and media center in latin america and prospered in it's golden years under great figures such as Adhemar de Barros and Jânio Quadros.
The Fourth Centenary of São Paulo was an event celebrating 400 years of the city of São Paulo. Such commemoration extended during the days 9, 10 and 11 of July of 1954, with the participation of diverse politicians and important personalities of the time. The event was organized by the State of São Paulo and by the Association of Broadcasters of São Paulo (AESP), started on the change from the 8th to the 9th of July, in front of the Sé Cathedral, also built as part of the commemoration of the city's anniversary. Its end, on the 11th, was celebrated in Alto da Lapa with a huge fireworks display.
