Luxuriate in this striking studio recording of QSO Section Principal Percussion David Montgomery's 'Jiayuguan Marimbas', performed here by David and Jacob Enoka.
A word from David on the piece: โJiayuguan Marimbas was commissioned for the Silk Road Cultural Festival in Jiayuguan, China in 2013. Named for the nearby Jiayu Pass, the Western-most outpost of the Great Wall, Jiayuguan sits at the southern reaches of the Gobi Desert and was one of the first entrance points into China for travellers and traders along the Silk Road. By means of certain melodic and rhythmic memes, Jiauguan Marimbas seeks to stimulate the imagination of the listener to scenes of military ramparts, rolling desert hills and the colourful exchange of trade and ideas at a time when the Silk Road flourished.โ

![Mussorgsky (arr. Ravel) - Pictures at an Exhibition [snippets] | Benjamin Northey
Mussorgskyโs Pictures at an Exhibition was a series of pieces for piano based on a famous set of paintings. The paintings themselves were small but the sounds that Mussorgsky created were so big, it wasnโt long before fellow composer Maurice Ravel arranged them into an aurally spectacular version for orchestra.
Enjoy this video of four movements from Pictures at an Exhibition:
Promenade: 0:23
Gnomus: 1:50
Bydlo: 4:35
The Ballet of the Chicks in Their Shells: 7:05
Recorded in QPACs Concert Hall in May 2021 under the baton of Benjamin Northey.
