What if Jezebel was not simply the wicked queen later tradition made her out to be?
In this MythVision interview, Derek Lambert is joined by Professor Shawna Dolansky to explore the ancient world behind the Hebrew Bible. Dolansky specializes in the emergence of the Hebrew Bible within its ancient Near Eastern context, with research crossing ancient history, religious studies, literature, archaeology, anthropology, gender, magic, goddesses, figurines, and the real lives of people behind the biblical texts.
We discuss Jezebel, one of the most vilified women in biblical history. Was she merely a wicked foreign queen, or does the biblical portrait reflect later polemic, political anxiety, religious conflict, and the need to blame powerful women and foreign alliances for Israel’s failures?
We also explore the evidence that ancient Israelite religion was not always strict monotheism. On the ground, Israelite religion looked much more like the wider Canaanite and ancient Near Eastern world than many modern readers realize. Goddesses, divine figures, household religion, magical practices, necromancy, figurines, and ritual life all complicate the clean picture later biblical editors wanted to preserve.
Then we turn to Adam and Eve. How much of what people believe about the Garden of Eden actually comes from Genesis? Satan is not in the original story. The fruit is not called an apple. Original sin is a later interpretation. Even the word “sin” does not appear in the Eden story itself. So what happens when we strip away centuries of interpretation and read the story in its ancient context?
This conversation asks a powerful question: what did these biblical stories mean before later theology, church tradition, and popular culture reshaped them?
