There is a persistent misunderstanding about what critical scholars and skeptics actually believe about the Bible's age. The accusation goes like this: "You think everything in the Bible was invented from scratch in the Hellenistic period. You think ancient Israel had no traditions, no stories, no prophets until the Greeks showed up."
That is not what we think. And this stream is where we set the record straight.
Derek Lambert (MythVision Podcast) and Neal Sendlak sit down to walk through the evidence inside the biblical text itself that tells us some traditions are clearly older than the final form of the books that contain them. Archaic Hebrew poetry that preserves grammatical forms from centuries before the texts were compiled. References to Bronze Age customs that no Hellenistic author would have known or cared about. Place names, social structures, and religious practices that only make sense in an earlier historical context. Prophetic oracles that reflect specific geopolitical situations from the Assyrian and Babylonian periods. Fragments of mythology that connect to ancient Canaanite and wider Near Eastern traditions going back to the second millennium BCE.
The real scholarly position has always been that the Bible contains ancient traditions that were transmitted, shaped, edited, and compiled into their final written form over centuries. The traditions are old. The texts as we have them are late. Both of those things are true at the same time, and understanding the difference between the tradition and the text is the foundation of critical biblical scholarship.
This matters because the fundamentalist and the strawman critic make the same mistake from opposite directions. The fundamentalist says the traditions are ancient, therefore the texts are ancient and reliable as written. The strawman critic says the texts are late, therefore everything in them was made up in the Hellenistic period. Both are wrong. The real picture is more interesting than either extreme: ancient oral traditions, some going back centuries or even a millennium before the texts were finalized, were collected, shaped, reinterpreted, and woven together by later editors who had their own theological and political purposes.
