The Williamstown Rifle Range was established in 1862, initially at Williamstown Beach before moving to a more permanent site in 1878 that became known as the Merrett Rifle Range. It was a significant defense installation, used for military training, civilian rifle clubs, and the 1956 Olympic Games.
After closing in 1987, the land was redeveloped into the Rifle Range housing estate, though some heritage elements, like the original clubhouse, remain. The Jawbone Conservation Reserve was established generally where the target area was located.
