First cancer linked to Fukushima reported
Tokyo acknowledged the first possible casualty from radiation resulting from the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster. Reports are that a worker was diagnosed with cancer after the 2011 event. This may come back to haunt the Japanese government in many ways, as it has tried to assure the public that health concerns related to the disaster have been minimal and as it prepares to restart reactors across the country.
Cambodia doctor on trail for giving HIV to patients
Normally, when we’re sick, we reach out for assistance from the medical community. Doctors and nurses are charged with keeping us healthy or at least getting us there if we’re under the weather, but in Cambodia an unlicensed physician is on trial for allegedly infecting more than 200 people with HIV, and thus has been charged with murder.
To curb dissent, Thai junta seeks online taskforce
In the wake of the plan to erect a “great firewall” to monitor online content in Thailand, the junta has now announced it seeks to develop a new military unit to fight online dissent. On Tuesday, Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwon told reporters, “It's to prevent new types of threats, it's a pre-emptive measure.”
Typhoon Kuppo leaves a trail of destruction
What was once Super Typhoon Kuppo is nothing more than a tropical storm. The storm continues to crawl through the Philippines at the pace of 4kph leaving a wake of destruction in its path. The storm, which spans 650km, brought with it a half-month’s worth of rain in just 24 hours, completely flooding some towns and affecting some 300,000 people. 17 people have been confirmed to have perished in this storm and relief efforts are struggling to get to remote areas.
