This episode of "Japan to 1868" focuses on the history of Japan in the immediate aftermath of the battle of Sekigahara and the seizure of control by the Tokugawa Family. After the destruction of the Toyotomi clan, the Tokugawa were granted the title of Shogun by the Emperor, but in order to be fully effective as rulers, they needed to ensure that a stable system was set up. They did this, in part, by ensuring that those loyal to them at Sekigahara (the Fudai Daimyo) were granted choice land, while those who opposed them (the Tozama Daimyo) were granted lands not only surrounded by Fudai territory but often situated at the ends of the Japanese islands.
