An examination of how Imperial Rome's armies supplied themselves while on campaign and while at peace. Due to the scarcity of the source material, and due to the ambiguity within those sources, determining how the legions maintained supply routes while fighting is difficult. We know, for example, that Roman legions used a combination of pack animals and carrying supplies on the backs of their own troops to move materials, but what we don't know is how many animals were required--in other words we have the general picture but we lack the fine print.
