Court Orders Shutdown of Takahama Reactors in Japan!
A Japanese court has issued an injunction to suspend operations of 2 nuclear reactors at the Takahama plant in Fukui Prefecture, central Japan. It's the first such injunction for reactors currently in operation.
Twenty-nine residents of neighboring Shiga Prefecture sought an injunction in January last year demanding that the plant's operator, Kansai Electric Power Company, keep the No.3 and No.4 reactors offline. They claim the reactors are unsafe and at risk of major accidents.
The Takahama plant's No.3 reactor was restarted in January this year under new government regulations introduced after the 2011 Fukushima disaster. The No.4 reactor was put back online last month, but 3 days later it shut down automatically for reasons still under investigation.
On Wednesday, the Otsu District Court ruled in the residents' favor.
Kansai Electric Power will have to stop the No.3 reactor as soon as possible because the injunction takes effect immediately.
The company says it plans to lodge an objection to have the decision canceled.
Niigata Nuclear Reactor Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Has "Control Rod Trouble" TEPCO CLAIMS the control rods moved by themselves and moved themselves BACK without help... without explanation.
The operator of a nuclear power plant on the Sea of Japan coast says a control rod in an offline reactor has moved unexpectedly.
Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, says the trouble occurred soon after 2 PM on Tuesday at the No.5 reactor of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata Prefecture.
TEPCO officials say an alarm indicated that one of the reactor's 185 control rods moved out of its normal position.
They say workers were at the time manipulating valves related to the control rods as part of regular inspections, but did not operate the rods.
They also say the rod returned to its normal position after about a minute.
TEPCO says the trouble caused no nuclear fission chain reaction and does not affect the surrounding area.
Control rods are crucial for security in reactors. The firm reported the trouble to the government and is investigating into the cause.
The reactor is a boiling-water type, the same as those at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant. It has been offline since 2012 for regular inspections. www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20160308_29

Takahama No.3 Nuclear Reactor To Go Offline
A nuclear reactor along the Japan Sea coast is expected to go offline late Thursday, following the issuance of a provisional injunction by a local court ordering its shutdown.
The Otsu District Court on Wednesday ordered Kansai Electric Power Company to halt the operation of the No.3 and No.4 reactors at the Takahama nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture.
It maintained that the utility has yet to present a full response to persistent doubts about its capability to react to possible nuclear accidents and other emergencies.
The operator is to start the process of shutting down the No.3 reactor on Thursday morning. 32 control rods that contain fissionable material are to be placed in coolant water.
The reactor will come to a halt in the evening.
The lawsuit that sought the injunction was filed by residents in Shiga Prefecture, bordering Fukui.
The ruling is the first to order suspension of a restarted reactor.
The No.3 reactor was restarted in January, and has been in use for 42 days.
Kansai Electric plans to lodge an appeal shortly.
The No.4 reactor was restarted in late February, but was shut down because of a technical glitch.
