WIPP "Independent Study of the Radiological Event" at Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad New Mexico Truck Fire of Feb. 5, 2014 and Bursted Drum of Radioactive Contaminates on Feb 14, 2014. Meeting held Feb 17, 2016. The AV people running this meeting need to hand the MICROPHONE to people asking questions and answering questions. I adjusted the volume up as far up as it would go in several areas, and it is Still difficult to hear some of the questions. tinyurl.com/htmhr23

Some notes I jotted down:
TAT Report, WSIIR Team Assessment of TAT Review WSIIR Team
Organic kitty litter - drum rupture , los Alamos, temperature, chemical reactions, truck fire, Feb 5 2014. TAT = Technical Assessment Team.
Hard to link truck fire and drum rupture - "no connection"
21:30 Los Alamos findings organics plus salt = heat.
number 68660 analysis Yes - it should have run away and caused a breech. parameters studied yield eventual rupture.
Nitrates can increase temperature by 60 degrees triggering an exothermic rupture similar to 68660 drum
24:00 many variables tested. Bottom line: physical tests similar to drum 68660.
26:00 LANL conclusion
head space testing continues, kitty litter, LANL path forward - add zeolite. Processing permit still needed.
Waste treatment options.
EMRC research center
volatile future of drums
DOT standard tests for sensitivity
28:00 Mary asks about plastics
30:00 "I don't know if the public knew it"
sweet plus salt equals drum rupture
32:00 Los Alamos corrective actions investigation
Conditions that lead up to burst: lots of pressure leading to contractors to move more drums in assembly, processing, and delivery to WIPP and NOT FOLLOWING PROCEDURE
Van Romero (speaker) can be reached at vromero@nmt.edu or wsiir@nmt.edu
34:30 runaway reaction
keep drums like them in WIPP and "review procedures"
37:00 kitty litter used as absorbent for liquids - organic vs. inorganic material
chemistry and ph levels
41:30 Norbert asks a question (buffering) - sorry
roof collapse, bolts, salt dome, zeolite, volatile, volatility, chemistry, chemistry was a stepchild, Van Romero reports to Ryan Flynn over DOE. Subcontractors.
No transporting or processing of radioactive drums - "other than that... you can do anything you want with them".
My conclusion: It's just a matter of time before the next radioactive drum pops open - even though some drums have sat there "a pretty long time".
