If there’s one Daria character who can claim to be just as, if not MORE iconic than Daria Morgendorffer herself, it’s Lawndale’s resident art prodigy, Jane Lane. As Daria’s best friend, Jane was a constant presence throughout the show’s five-season run, often joining our cynical heroine on her many misanthropic misadventures. But make no mistake… Jane is so much more than just Daria’s sidekick – and it’s easy to see WHY she’s resonated with so many. Despite being unpopular at school, Jane is talented, witty, and usually pretty self-assured. She’s a character anyone who felt like a misfit growing up can aspire to. But while Jane is undeniably COOL, there’s also an unmistakable sadness beneath it all. This largely stems from the way she was raised, which – ironically – played a HUGE role in shaping the persona we all know and love. It’s all part of the layered mosaic that makes up the “sick, sad world” of Jane Lane.
