There are many reasons why the Old Testament is difficult to understand: it is a series of ancient documents, written for an ancient people, with an ancient worldview. Additionally, we are a modern people, with modern problems and a modern worldview. It isn't that the Old Testament can't be understood, it is that understanding it may require some tools.
