Phillip Sear plays a 1904 waltz by the British organist and composer James Lyon (1872–1949).
-------------------------------------------------------------
Born in Manchester, Lyon studied at Oxford and later worked in ecclesiastical and teaching contexts, with his musical training described as largely self-directed apart from formal study and the award of the Mus.Doc. in 1904. He became a sub-organist of Bangor Cathedral in 1892, organist of St. Michael's College, Tenbury (1893), organist of St. Mark's, Surbiton (1896) and organist and music master at Warwick School (1897). His career placed him within the tradition of English parish and cathedral musicians, and the documentary record suggests a modest but steady professional life rather than a large-scale public platform. He died in Australia.

Lyon’s solo piano output appears to have been limited and is less documented than his organ and church music. On the evidence readily available, his keyboard writing belongs to the wider Victorian-Edwardian idiom, with a practical, diatonic musical language and an emphasis on clear phrase structure rather than virtuoso display. No single piano work emerges from the surviving references as a repertory standard, and his pieces seem to have circulated chiefly in domestic or pedagogical settings rather than concert programmes.

His broader catalogue is more substantial in sacred and organ repertoire, where he is represented as a church musician-composer of conventional but serviceable craft. The 1904 doctorate marks his standing within the English organ tradition, and his music fits a line of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Anglican composition that valued liturgical usefulness over innovation.

This piece (like the other two in the set) is somewhat Chopinesque.
