On June 16, 1949, reigning world middleweight champion Marcel Cerdan defended his title against Jake “The Bronx Bull” LaMotta at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, Michigan. LaMotta won after Cerdan’s corner stopped the fight before the 10th round, making LaMotta the new middleweight champion.
Cerdan suffered a serious left-shoulder injury during a first-round knockdown and was forced to fight much of the bout with limited use of his left arm. LaMotta also injured his left hand, but continued pressing forward and reportedly landed 104 punches in the ninth round.
The official records list the result as a ninth-round retirement, while some contemporary descriptions record it as a technical knockout at the start of the 10th round because Cerdan could not answer the bell.
