A person may speak 'the right words' and still be a villain. It's called lying. #JairBolsonaro is truly a world class liar and villain. Having failed to protect both indigenous people and the rainforest during his entire presidency, he pledged, at the World Leaders Summit on Earth Day 2021, that Brazil would be carbon neutral by 2050, and that it would eliminate illegal deforestation by 2030, with twice the inspections and enforcement. As my father used to say, "Two times zero is still zero."
Words in the mouth of a notorious environmental enemy, slyly affirming the right to development, ring hollow in the face of all his actions. He wants the rest of the world to take "collective responsibility for the maintenance of the biome". In other words, pay for the rainforest, or he'll continue to let it burn. Giving this man money and letting him define "enforcement" would be a huge mistake.
Please pressure the Biden administration to NOT allow Bolsonaro to hold the Amazon hostage for money that will NOT be used as we intend it to be used. It will be deposited into some offshore bank for his personal gain and that of his cronies.
