How do you repair and rehabilitate a major hydropower intake when the critical structures are located approximately 60 metres underwater?
This animation, produced by International Energy Club for DCN Diving, presents the complex underwater engineering operations carried out as part of the Ituango Hydropower Project in Antioquia, Colombia.
Ituango is one of Colombia’s most significant hydropower developments, with a powerhouse designed for approximately 2.4 GW of installed capacity. Following the major construction crisis in 2018, the rehabilitation of the project required highly specialized underwater intervention to restore and secure the intake structures.
For DCN Diving, the scope of work included ROV surveys, dredging, engineering and installation of major steel plugs, underwater cleaning, grouting, dewatering and subsequent removal/reinstallation operations within the intake structures.
One of the defining challenges was the installation of the steel isolation plugs at approximately 60 metres water depth, requiring specialized saturation diving and complex underwater engineering in a confined environment with extremely limited visibility. DCN's project documentation records the use of 3D survey and modeling technologies to accurately understand and manage the submerged structures.
The animation was developed to transform this highly complex sequence of underwater operations into a clear and visually compelling technical story — allowing engineers, contractors, project stakeholders and decision-makers to understand what happens beneath the water, how the intervention is executed, and how the different engineering systems work together.
At International Energy Club, we specialize in visualizing complex engineering operations across the marine, offshore, subsea, energy and water infrastructure industries.
From an offshore construction campaign to a hydropower dam rehabilitation project — if it is technically complex, we can visualize it.
