This fish pass under the new quays of Slussen in Stockholm is one of the largest and most advanced in Sweden. 🐟🌊
The fish pass is an artificial stretch of water that helps the fish swim more freely. It allows more than 50 species, such as eel, roach and perch, to migrate between the freshwater of Lake Mälaren and the brackish water of the Baltic Sea.
Previously, obstacles like dams and locks made it hard for fish to travel, which has a negative effect on their feeding and breeding. Now the fish can follow their natural routes again!
In the fish pass at Slussen, there’s also a counter with a camera that tracks all the species that swim through it. Besides the fun of fish watching, it helps monitor fish populations and protect the ecosystem from invasive species. 📸
