It has been said that when tragedy appears in our lives, God's gifts are given in compensation for our sorrows.
This song is one of those gifts. It was written by Horatio Spafford. He was a prominent lawyer who lost all of his real estate holdings in the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 - just a short time after the death of his 4 year old son.
A short year and a half later, he decided to take his family to England for a rest and to help them recover from their losses. When business summoned him, he decided to send his wife and four daughters ahead of him. Several days later he received word that the ship they were on had sunk and his wife was the only survivor from his family.
Grief stricken, Horatio boarded a ship that would take him to his grieving wife in England. When he passed the same waters where the accident occured he wrote the words to this song: It Is Well With My Soul. After 140 years, it continues to inspire and give hope to the hurting.
