Israel says it has hit Hezbollah's central headquarters in an attack on a densely populated Beirut neighborhood.

Israeli media say the target was Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. It's the biggest Israeli attack on Beirut since the 2006 Lebanon war, and the Iranian embassy there has warned that the strike is an escalation that "changes the rules of the game." Hezbollah is backed by Iran and has been firing rockets into Israel since the Oct. 7 terror attack by its ally Hamas. The EU lists its armed wing as a terrorist group. Earlier this month, Israel shifted the focus of its military operations from Gaza to Lebanon.

The Beirut bombing came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly, where he vowed to continue fighting Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.
