ISLAND, a SESAR 3 project led by the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub with the involvement of 19 partners, focuses on developing a more efficient and responsive airspace system by harnessing artificial intelligence and machine learning to increase automation and develop recommendation support tools.
The project is organised into two innovative solutions.
Digital Capacity addresses air traffic flow management challenges by improving the way we optimise airspace usage, predict traffic patterns and encourage teamwork. With this AI-powered solution, we will be able to foresee critical network situations accurately, contributing to a smarter and more efficient air navigation system.
The Virtual Centre solution focuses on providing on-demand air traffic services. The solution aims at transforming the way airspace is managed by delegating ATM services among various air traffic service units, which enhances both efficiency and resilience. By leveraging virtualisation, we will be able to adapt to traffic demand without geographical limitations, leading to cost savings and reduced CO2 emissions.
