From the dramatic port of Isafjordur, Iceland, we took an excursion to the abandoned village of Hesteryri on the Jokulfirdir Fjord. There are no roads to the settlement, so it can only be visited by boat. The settlement began with a whaling station and grew with a Herring processing plant, but overfishing caused the herring plant to go out of business and by 1952, the village was abandoned. You can still see the schoolhouse, the doctor's house, the store and the foundations of the church that was moved after the village was abandoned. A cemetery now exists where the church once stood. There is a gorgeous waterfall and views of the water and snow. The area is now a nature reserve with artic foxes and used for hiking and camping during the summer.
On the way back to Isafjordur, we saw humpback whales! We even saw the gorgeous whale tails!
