Vernon's Kuntry Kitchen, Conroe, TX (2016)
Since we filmed there in 2016, Buster unfortunately passed away, but the family legacy continues today!
Tucked off West Davis Street is a place that Vernon and Mary Bowers built from scratch in 1984 — ten tables, forty seats, and a dream rooted in good food and Southern hospitality. That's right. What started as a little neighborhood catfish joint has become one of the most beloved restaurants in the entire Houston area. And I'm not kidding.
Vernon passed in 2001, but his family kept the doors open, the grease hot, and the spirit alive. Today, Kuntry Katfish is still family owned and operated, and the food tastes exactly like it always has. Like somebody's grandma made it. Like it matters.
Here's what you need to know: the catfish is coated in a traditional cornmeal batter, fried in peanut oil until it's golden and crackling, and served with hush puppies that have chopped onion and peppers baked right inside them. Oh, and they bring those hush puppies out with pickled green tomatoes before you even order. You haven't lived until you've had that combination.
