Elizabeth Crockett's Grave, Granbury (2015)
Texas has a state park so small you could miss it by blinking, just 0.006 acres, and it holds exactly one thing: the grave of Elizabeth Crockett, widow of Alamo defender Davy Crockett.
After Davy died at the Alamo in 1836, Elizabeth moved her family to this stretch of land near Granbury to claim the grant given to the heirs of Alamo defenders. She lived here until her death in 1860 at age 72, having outlived her famous husband by nearly a quarter century. In 1913, the state unveiled a 28 foot monument on her grave, a statue of a pioneer woman shielding her eyes as she looks west, the same direction Davy rode off in.
The state took over the plot in 1949, and it remains Texas' smallest state park to this day. It's a quiet, easy stop just outside Granbury, and it tells one of the most overlooked stories connected to the Alamo.
