Another busy day on the farm! Today we’re moving the combine back closer to the home farm after finishing up the faraway rented ground. That means about 900–1,000 acres of wheat left to harvest, and yields are looking strong at 150–170 bushels per acre in some spots. Always fun to see the Fendt IDEAL 9 in action — “The Beast” hard at work.
But wheat harvest is just one part of the juggling act. At the same time we’ve got hay to rake, bale, and haul, plus hundreds of acres of straw still waiting to be baled. Trevor is running the baler, Christopher’s on the combine, and I’m out raking hay and later moving over to help with vine chopping and rolling a potato field that’s cracking open. When potato hills crack, sunlight can green up the tubers — so we’ve got to stay ahead of that with a vine beater and roller.
We’re also still hauling manure, moving irrigation pivots, and loading hay stacks while semis haul out the last of last year’s potatoes from the refrigerated cellars. Never a dull moment when hay, wheat, and potatoes all overlap in the season.
