We finally hauled in over a year’s worth of scrap metal from around the farm to the recycler — and it turned out to be way more worth it than we expected.
From loading massive metal bins with the backhoe to watching the recycler’s giant magnet unload everything like it’s nothing, this was one of those satisfying farm cleanup days. Frozen ground, overfilled bins, heavy chains, old equipment parts — it all adds up.
Metal prices are finally coming back up, and this load alone ended up weighing 11,640 lbs and paid out $622 at $107 per ton. Not bad for stuff that was just sitting around!
We still have multiple loads left to haul in, including old cellar vent pipe, chains, and more farm scrap — so this definitely isn’t the last trip.
If you’ve been thinking about recycling scrap metal, now might be a good time.
