Is Square Enix Trying To Overwrite FF7's Past?
Final Fantasy 7 (1997) by Squaresoft is the real FFVII. FF7 Remake, Rebirth & Revelation feel like Square Enix is trying to rewrite or correct the past. In this article by Noisy Pixel, Yoshinori Kitase reveals that he feels embarrassed by the original 90s JRPG, when it comes to how it portrays social issues. I think the usual suspects who are ruining video games have gotten in the dev's ears, and made them feel like the original FF7 is "problematic" by today's standards. It feels to me like FF7R is trying to overwrite the OG Playstation game, and become the new definitive, clean, sanitized version of Final Fantasy 7. All your favorite characters have been rewritten for "Modern Audiences": Cloud Strife, Tifa, Red XIII, Aeris, Cid Highwind, Barret, Cait Sith, Sephiroth, and more. It's like a really lame 1984 by George Orwell, except it's rewriting the history around your own childhood. Maybe I'm being a tin foil hat conspiracy theorist here, but I see the motivation and I see the result. Thankfully they can't delete the original FF7, no matter how hard they try. But what they can do is flood the airways with so much FF7R stuff, that it dilutes (and at times, drowns out) search results for the original game. You can already see this happening it real time with Google Image / Youtube search results. Ultimately its on us gamers to choose what we accept and reject. People as a whole have already rejected official "canon" that feels disrespectful to both the audience and source material eg The Matrix 4, Rings of Power, the latest Star Wars trilogy. Metal Gear Solid fans tell you to play the OG game over the Twin Snakes Remake. But it's on us to remember the past, to remember our childhoods, and to document / save what we can. Bad faith actors have always tried to rewrite the past for their own selfish purposes. How do you prevent this? In the words of George Orwell: "Don't let it happen."
