Here's everything you need to know before you go 👇
🌞 Daylight:
You'll get 11 to 14 hours of daylight — still plenty of time for exploring.
👀 Northern Lights:
September marks the return of Northern Lights season. You can spot them all over the country, from the capital area to remote fjords, as long as the skies are clear.
⛰️🌧️ Weather:
Average temperatures are 6 to 12°C (43-54°F). September usually brings the first real autumn chill, with a mix of sunshine, rain, and wind, often all in one day.
🧳 Packing:
Pack layers: wool or fleece underneath, a wind- and waterproof shell on top, plus a beanie, gloves, and woolen socks. Bring sturdy waterproof boots, a swimsuit, sunglasses, and sunscreen, too.
🏔️ Activities:
September is the last month when the Highlands are accessible, so go hiking there while you can. Try horse riding and go on a road trip through the countryside to see the fantastic autumn colours. Go whale watching, try glacier hiking, and go snorkelling. ATV and buggy rides are also a fun way to explore, and September is also the last month for kayaking in Iceland. Don't skip a soak in a hot spring, pool, or lagoon.
