I turned 48 this year, and if you'd told me two decades ago I'd still be gaming this much, I probably wouldn't have believed I'd have the time for it. But retro gaming fits into a busy adult life in a way modern gaming just doesn't.
Simple controllers. Three, four, six buttons. I've lost my place in modern games like God of War and Morrowind (ok, it might be a stretch to call this one modern!) after a few months away because there were just too many controls to remember. That doesn't happen with a SNES pad.
Jump in, jump out. Games like Super Mario Bros. 3 broke levels into bite sized chunks you could finish in minutes. Outrun gave you a five minute loop worth replaying for the score chase alone. That design philosophy is basically made for a busy schedule.
Gaming on a budget. PC emulation, MiSTer FPGA, Evercade, eBay. There's an entry point at every price range.
It's good for your brain. Problem solving, hand eye coordination, keeping those synapses firing matters more the older you get.
And yeah, I collect too. Real cartridges, box art, the whole thing. I'll show you a shock box I bought for Real Bout Fatal Fury on the Neo Geo.
If you're in your 40s (or older!) and wondering whether retro gaming is worth getting back into, this one's for you.
