Derek Van Schaik | Is only child syndrome real? @DerekVanSchaik | Uploaded May 2023 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
Have you ever met someone who grew up without siblings, an only child, and did they seem at all different?
There is a theory commonly known as only child syndrome. This is characterized by self-centeredness, perfectionism, difficulty sharing, independence, greater outward maturity, and easily offended by videos they watch online. Okay, I may have made up that last one. The theory is that since they never have to share their parents’ attention among their other siblings, they may have more self-centered qualities, don’t learn often and therefore don’t know how to properly share, have a more mature demeanor because they spend more time with adults, are more self-reliant because they must learn to entertain themselves, perfectionists due to high parental expectation, based on the scarcity effect, and also due to a lack of a comparison effect among siblings.
Did any of these celebrity only children surprise you based on what you know their personalities to be?
There are also oldest, middle, and youngest child syndromes, and I’ll cover those in future videos.
