For centuries, Darfur was not just a region, it was its own country. An independent sultanate with its own rulers (a long dynasty), trade routes, diplomacy, and capital. Today, it’s one of the most violent regions on Earth. But Sudan’s civil war may be changing that. As Sudan collapses into a West-East divide and armed groups carve out territory, Darfur finds itself once again separated from the centre. In this video, we explore Darfur’s forgotten history, from its medieval kingdoms and powerful sultans to colonial conquest and modern war. And ask whether Darfur could realistically become an independent country, despite the fact they would be ruled by those who are against the locals.
