Sorry for not uploading for two weeks, but Is It Possible #13 is finally here! As a prize for winning second place in my contest, Kinetic Chaos got to suggest an idea for an Is It Possible or Challenge Accepted video. He chose to have me replicate his second-place-winning machine. This is the result, after three days of building, another four days of testing, and a record 127 fails! Can't say I'm surprised, though. I was testing Is It Possible #*13* on *FRIDAY THE 13TH*.
Kinetic Chaos and I emailed back and forth multiple times during the building process. He sent me pictures and videos of his machine, so I could build it out of my K'nex. But of course, I had to make it more complicated, so I added an additional track on the top. Also, the surrounding tracks and materials are all very different from his, so even though the idea and design of the rotating structure belong to Kinetic Chaos, it still took a lot of thought and testing to get my version to work. So, I hope you like it, Kinetic Chaos!
The hardest part about building this machine was that the falling baseball caused a lot of vibrations on the table. This would cause balls to roll or dominoes to fall before they were supposed to. To solve this, I came up with two great techniques. To prevent the pivot tracks from falling, I elevated the end closest to the edge of the table. To prevent the golf ball from rolling, I attached a tiny piece of rubber band to the end of the string, that was able to grip the track a lot better.
