In this video, I review It Ends, an eerie and unsettling new thriller that premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival before becoming the first film from the Letterboxd Video Store to receive a major theatrical release through NEON. After hearing strong reactions to the film coming out of SXSW, I was eager to finally see what made this small-scale indie stand out.
The film follows a group of friends who find themselves trapped on a seemingly never-ending road, forcing them to confront an increasingly mysterious and unnerving situation. As they attempt to understand what is happening and find a way out, the film explores ideas of uncertainty, helplessness, growing up, and feeling directionless.
In this spoiler-free review, I discuss the direction from writer-director Alex Ullom, the performances and chemistry between the ensemble, the film's eerie atmosphere, cinematography, writing, pacing, and its ability to create tension within such a confined setting.
