Why classify DIY as separate from commercially designed? Why do we value things that are deliberately constructed to be “broken” from the perspective of design principles? Join us for a conversation with local independent game designer Nicholas Fortugno on punk aesthetics in games. When acting against commercial interests by creating games that are anti-consumer, one needs another aesthetic yardstick to value the work. What makes a DIY game loved or hated? Does its value come from its Authenticity or its clever Irony? Is there even a measure by with anti-design and anti-consumer work can be valued? -- Watch live at twitch.tv/babycastles

◥ Part of Terraforms - Game Mods at Babycastles ◥
Curated by Sarah Brin and Zach Gage
( v. ) 1. to modify a worlds environment so that it can support Earth life-forms, especially humans. An exhibition dedicated to game artists and their radical reconfigurations of traditional gamescapes. As we move further into the digital realm, the rules that govern it are becoming increasingly transparent. What was once clearly articulated has become an amorphous set of unchallenged rules and sociological boundaries. Despite their subtlety, these digital restrictions, much like the natural laws of the physical world, affect every aspect of the increasingly virtual lifestyles we lead. Yet, the virtural world is made of code, and its rules can be broken. These seven artists move outside of digital boundaries, forcibly modifying gamescapes while pressing us to rethink our beliefs.
