Cycling the world - Asia: 16 episode
Racing toward the Iraqi border before my Turkish visa expires I start the day having breakfast with the family who hosted me overnight. The landscape becomes dry and desertlike as I ride along the Syrian border and the heat grows heavy and humid among endless corn fields. I take a short nap on a filthy couch outside a small shop then re route onto the main highway to save seventy kilometres on the way to Silopi. I load my thermos with ice from a giant ice block stand used by truck drivers and sleep under grape vines beside the highway where the neighbours invite me for dinner.
Next morning I push east again following the Syrian border in intense heat stopping at bus shelters when I can. I camp in a field by the road then follow the wall that separates the two countries until the Tigris River becomes the border itself. I reach Silopi the day before my visa expires collect a package with winter clothing from DHL and find a cheap place to sleep while I wash my laundry and reorganise my kit for Iraq.
